SKULLS
In Hollenbeq's Skull series, we encounter death in its simplest and at the same time most disturbing form: a skull that appears to be grinning, accompanied by the provocative words "Stop the fuck laughing at me". This grin is not an expression of humor or joy - it is the natural shape of the skull that inevitably smiles at us. But therein lies the power of this work: it confronts us with the cynical truth of our own transience and the way we try to deal with it.

BACKGROUND
The cynical grin of death
The skull grins. Not because it wants to, but because it looks like it. This inevitable laughter has a mocking effect - as if it were smiling at human fear and desperate attempts to escape death. The skull's grin thus becomes a symbol of an inescapable truth: death awaits each and every one of us, and no amount of repression, excuses or humor will change that.
Hollenbeq's skull is not a dramatic allegory. It is direct and honest. It forces us to look into the eye sockets of the inevitable and accept the cold reality: We are transient. But it is precisely this raw portrayal that leaves no room for escape or distraction - the grin remains.
THE EMPTINESS THAT REMAINS
The slogan "Stop the fuck laughing at me" reinforces the effect of the skull. It could come from the mouth of the skull itself, as an angry protest against the laughter that people often use to cover up their fear. At the same time, however, it could also be the voice of the viewer, defending himself against the mocking grin of death. Hollenbeq deliberately plays with this ambivalence here. The laughter - whether of the skull or the viewer - becomes an expression of our insecurity. We try to defuse death with humor, but this humor remains superficial. The slogan forces us to question our defense strategies and face the inevitable.
In the context of Hollenbeq's non-existence as an artist, Skull takes on another level of meaning. The skull does not speak for a creator, but for ourselves. The grin becomes a metaphor for the emptiness that we try to fill with meaning or significance - be it in art, in life or in dealing with death.
Hollenbeq shows that this emptiness cannot disappear, no matter how much we ignore or cover it up. The skull reminds us that death is an unavoidable truth - and that sooner or later we will have to come to terms with this reality.
Hollenbeq leaves us with a bitter truth: death laughs last, and we must learn to live with that smile. The skull's grin is not an accusation - it is a fact. It challenges us to accept the absurdity of life and to ask ourselves how we want to deal with the knowledge of our transience.
