Cat pictures as art? Hollenbeq opens Schrödinger's box - and blows up the contents
Hollenbeq's work with the unwieldy title "Although cats are involved, liminalism is brainfuck - maybe!" is a radical attack on digital culture - a relentless dismantling of our consumption patterns. It shows what happens when the superficiality of meme culture and cat imagery meets harsh reality: everything disintegrates into fragments, nothing endures. The work forces us to reflect on the emptiness of the content we scroll through every day - a reflection of a world that simulates meaning in its masses without ever really delivering it.

BACKGROUND
about the deconstruction of digital culture
Cats - ubiquitous, viral, universal. They are the queens of the internet, cute distractions, guarantors of likes and clicks. But Hollenbeq takes this meme culture apart and reduces it to the essentials: Emptiness. The iconic cuteness of cats is radically erased. Everything that is typically associated with them - playfulness, comfort, familiarity - disappears.
The fragmented, superimposed cats stand for a culture that produces content en masse and forgets it just as quickly. In Hollenbeq's work, they are symbols of a world that feigns diversity and mass without creating real substance. Their fragmentation and superimposition reflect the mechanisms of modern platforms - an endless cycle of consumption that leaves us with meaninglessness.
Liminalism: art in limbo
Hollenbeq's concept of liminalism has a decisive influence on his work. For him, art is not a finished product, but an open process. Dhe cats in his work are like the particle in the double-slit experiment - they exist in a superposition of possibilities. Only through the principle of conceptual incubationdoes the chaos dissolve and become a personal meaning. This openness makes the work not only a challenge, but also an invitation to reflect on one's own patterns of perception and consumption.
Part of the process or observer of the void?
Hollenbeq forces us to question our own position: does the flood of images and superimpositions actually produce something tangible, or is all that remains in the end is the trivial, brilliantly packaged? Yet it is precisely this tension that lies at the heart of his approach. "Although cats are involved, liminalism is brainfuck - maybe!" is not a simple reflection on art, but a statement about the mechanisms of digital culture. It holds up a mirror and asks: are we active participants in the construction of meaning, or do we passively observe a void that we ourselves have created?
