Conceptual incubation: Hollenbeq's answer to digital arbitrariness

"The only true thing about art is the decision!"
Silas Hollenbeq
Hollenbeq's concept of conceptual incubation is a radical statement about the meaning of art in a digitized, reproducible world. At a time when images are available without limits and are often meaningless, he poses the central question: when does art become art? For him, art does not begin with the object itself, but with the conscious decision to give it value and meaning.
His works initially exist only as digital concepts (conceptual previews) - pure possibilities in a kind of "superposition". Only through the act of incubation, the conscious decision of a viewer, does the idea become reality. But this moment is not a mere technical process: it is a profound act of co-creation that invites the viewer to take responsibility for the art and to see themselves as part of the creative process.
Hollenbeq's model of conceptual incubation is based on an extraordinary synthesis of quantum physics and his concept of liminalism. Inspired by the double-slit experiment, in which a particle only defines its form of existence through observation, he transfers this principle to art: a work only becomes real when the viewer consciously decides to perceive it.
With this approach, Hollenbeq pushes the boundaries of what art means. He creates a fascinating connection between science and art and at the same time places art in a completely new context: not as a mere object, but as a conscious action, as a confrontation, as a decision. In a world of visual arbitrariness, art thus becomes a radical act of presence.
Art is not a what.
Art is a when.

The process of conceptual incubation: art as a process
Hollenbeq's Conceptual Incubation builds on familiar artistic approaches and develops them further by emphasizing the moment of incubation and the active role of the viewer. This principle can be divided into four phases that illustrate the structure and particular dynamics of Conceptual Incubation.
01 The work as an idea: potential instead of object
In this phase, the work is an idea in the state of possibility, neither complete nor final.
The decision to activate the work becomes the precondition for its existence - a deconstruction of the classical process of creation, in which the work is already completed by the artist.
02 The moment of incubation: the conscious decision
This moment is central to Hollenbeq's practice: he turns the decision into the actual creation. The work does not exist without this conscious participation, which fundamentally redefines the role of the viewer.
The decision is more than an act of acquisition - it is performative and gives the work its uniqueness within a limited series.
03 The physical realization: transformation to materiality
Visually, the work remains unchanged - it already existed as a digital illustration. However, the incubation lifts it out of potential arbitrariness and gives it its place in the limited series through signature and certification.
The physical realization is not the creative climax, but a conscious act that manifests the meaning of the work.
04 The search for meaning: art as reflection
The viewer becomes the central protagonist: the work only becomes complete through his or her interpretations, thoughts and projections.
Hollenbeq's works address the relationship between surface and depth: they initially appear clear and minimalist, but it is only upon reflection that the social and philosophical dimensions are revealed.
